Another Banksy Is Destroyed in Melbourne…..

Street art scholars, local business people and concerned citizens say that the council should protect his work…..

But why?And is that what the council should really do?

Bansky is not an Australian artist and your asking our local council to care for his work?

Have you ever cared when we loose an Australian Street Art Piece?

Has the council?Does the Council care?

This is the same council that imprisons youths for partaking in the same act of street art. 

The same council who deem it illegal for me to carry spray paint from the art store back to my studio.

The same council who presume you are guilty until you can prove your innocence in all street art cases.

Now you are asking them to care? To protect?

WHY?!

Does this piece have significant relevance to the history of the Melbourne Street Art Scene?

No.

Significant cultural importance to Australia?

No.

There is only one reason Banksy is important .

Whats that reason?

What makes people care?

The answer is simple.

What sells thousands of newspapers….

What makes everyone listen to even the most mundane stories…..

Celebraties.

That’s the only reason people care. Bansky is famous. 

Think about it, you see it all the time…

Hundreds of people die every day of cancer. Nothing in the news.

Celebrity gets cancer. Front page news.

Great.

More exposure for cancer. Maybe the community will pay more attention. Maybe the council will do something.

Great.

Banksy piece gets destroyed. Great!

Lets use the opportunity to throw the spot light on street art.

Lets stop the council persecuting our youth for expressing themselves.

Lets stop being hypocrites and only caring about celebrities.

Lets protect Australian street artists work as well as international.

Lets take some pride in ourselves and our community. Fuck the council saving us. If you like a piece of street art here’s what you should do.
